Split editorial comparison of a self-custodial onchain exchange and a centralized derivatives platform.
Hyperliquid and Bybit both focus on derivatives, but use opposite custody and execution models.

Short answer

Choose Hyperliquid for self-custody, public onchain execution and lower standard entry-tier fees. Choose Bybit for fiat rails, copy trading and a broader retail product set. For most derivatives traders, custody preference is the deciding factor.

Which platform should you choose?

On-chain nativeHyperliquid

Self-custody with a genuinely fast on-chain order book — wallet or email access, without CEX-style identity verification.

Retail features & fiatBybit

Copy trading, earn products, bonuses and card/P2P fiat ramps — a retail feature set Hyperliquid does not attempt.

Fee-sensitive perps traderSlight edge: Hyperliquid

Entry-tier headline rates are lower (0.045%/0.015% vs 0.055%/0.02% taker/maker), and referral plus staking discounts stack on top.

Is Hyperliquid cheaper than Bybit?

On standard VIP 0 rates — checked 18 August 2026 against Bybit's published fee structure, which notes that actual rates can vary by region and account — Hyperliquid's perps schedule (0.045% taker / 0.015% maker) undercuts Bybit's 0.055% taker / 0.020% maker, and Hyperliquid spot (0.070%/0.040%) is below Bybit's standard 0.10% spot fee. Both venues discount from there: Bybit through VIP tiers tied to volume and balances, Hyperliquid through 14-day volume tiers, a 4% referral discount on the first $25M of volume and HYPE-staking discounts of 5–40%.

For very high-volume traders the schedules converge — Bybit's top VIP maker rates reach zero, while Hyperliquid's top volume tiers plus Diamond-tier staking compress fees substantially. At that scale, model your actual mix; below it, Hyperliquid's headline rates are simply lower. Both schedules change, so verify before committing size.

Which has the better trading experience?

These are the two most similar-feeling venues in this series: both are derivatives-first platforms with serious terminals. Bybit's app and web experience remain more polished for retail — and copy trading, demo accounts and structured products have no Hyperliquid equivalent. Bybit's unified trading account, which cross-margins spot, perps and options in one balance, is also more flexible than Hyperliquid's margin system for multi-product strategies.

Hyperliquid's advantage is verifiability at speed: an order book that runs fully on-chain with sub-second blocks, where every order, trade and liquidation is publicly inspectable. No centralized venue, Bybit included, offers that. Major-pair liquidity is deep on both; audit your specific long-tail pairs on each before assuming coverage.

Which is safer: Hyperliquid or Bybit?

Bybit is a custodial exchange: your assets sit with the company, and its February 2025 security incident — an attack on a cold-wallet transfer that drained roughly $1.5B in ETH, the largest exchange hack on record — is the concrete illustration of what that means. Bybit honoured withdrawals and replenished reserves, which is to its credit, but the episode shows custodial risk is real even at major venues.

Hyperliquid inverts the trade: funds stay in your wallet and trades settle on-chain, so there is no exchange account to breach — but you inherit full responsibility for keys, approvals and phishing defence, and you carry protocol and smart-contract risk instead. Neither model is strictly safer; they fail in different ways.

Does Hyperliquid or Bybit require KYC?

Bybit onboards from fiat — cards, bank transfers and a large P2P market — but requires identity verification for trading. Hyperliquid has no built-in fiat rails and assumes you arrive with crypto; access is by wallet or email login, generally without the identity-verification process centralized exchanges use, though eligibility and regional restrictions still apply. Withdrawals are on-chain transactions rather than requests an exchange approves.

A common pattern is using a centralized exchange as the fiat gateway and Hyperliquid as the trading venue — see how deposits work. If you take that route, check your exchange's deposit/withdrawal network support carefully — some support Hyperliquid transfers from Core spot balances but not from HyperEVM.

Which platform is right for you?

Choose Bybit if you want fiat on-ramps, copy trading and retail products, or simply prefer a company-run exchange with support desks and familiar workflows — and you accept custodial and KYC trade-offs. Choose Hyperliquid if you are comfortable on-chain and want self-custody, transparent execution and lower entry-tier fees. If you are comparing these two, you are probably a derivatives trader; the custody question, more than any feature, is the real decision.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hyperliquid cheaper than Bybit?

At entry tiers, yes on headline rates: 0.045%/0.015% taker/maker for perps versus Bybit's 0.055%/0.020%, with referral and staking discounts stacking on Hyperliquid's side. At high VIP tiers the gap narrows — model your own volume before deciding on cost alone.

Do both require KYC?

Bybit requires identity verification for trading. Hyperliquid supports wallet or email access and generally does not use the same identity-verification process as centralized exchanges — though eligibility and regional restrictions still apply, and access rules can change on either side.

Which is safer after Bybit's 2025 hack?

They carry different risks rather than a ranking. Bybit's ~$1.5B cold-wallet breach in February 2025 illustrated custodial risk, though users were made whole. Hyperliquid removes the custodial single point of failure but shifts responsibility for wallet security to you and adds protocol risk.

Which has more perp markets?

Both list extensive, fast-changing perp catalogues with equivalent coverage of majors. If your strategy depends on specific long-tail pairs, check them on both venues directly — listings change weekly.
